Friends of Otter Rock Marine Reserve and our partners have many events coming up! Check out what’s happening along the coast.
When you visit the Otter Rock Marine Garden tidepools this summer, look for our guides with the bright green vests! They’re well-versed in everything tidepool and will be glad to answer your questions — and show you where tidepool critters might be hiding. Check out the schedule here.
Sea Otters & Kelp Forests: Restoring Oregon’s Missing Link
Co-sponsored by Friends of Otter Rock Marine Reserve
Wednesday, June 3rd | 6-7:30pm
Sea otters once thrived along the Oregon coast and played a critical role in maintaining healthy kelp forests. Their population loss due to the maritime fur trade resulted in a missing link in Oregon’s nearshore ecosystem. Marine biologist Chanel Hason examines the role of sea otters as keystone predators, highlighting the ripple effects they have on kelp forests and estuaries, and what their return could mean for Oregon’s biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal resilience.

In August, we are having a month-long celebration of Oregon’s Marine Reserves and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)! You can celebrate with us by participating in our Bio-Blitz: visit one of Oregon’s five marine reserves or adjacent MPAs, take pictures of the organisms you see, and upload it to our iNaturalist project!
